March 4, 2010REAL CLEAR POLITICS March 2, 2010 In Praise of the Tea Party Movement By Jay Ambrose Excerpts: Like a hero rescuing a damsel tied up and lying on the railroad tracks as a train approaches, the tea party movement has been trying to save America from runaway leftism. But this hero, instead of being applauded, is taking it on the chin from critics who will invent any calumny and revise any truth to make their case. The movement consists of ignoramuses, it's said. It's a tool of the Republican party, some contend. The comedian Bill Maher, who thinks all Americans are stupid, calls it a cult. Its lineage is traced by a Prospect magazine article to Joe McCarthy and George Wallace. We've now had a tea party terrorist, we're informed. Some critics point to kooks in the party and others to haters, and at the end of the day, we are all left to shudder in fear of this dreadful thing. First, of course, it's true that any movement with millions of followers will have some oddballs and worse in the mix. But anyone who has ventured to a rally or paid close attention to the speeches knows the tea party fringe does not come close to summing up the whole, that there is nothing racist in its rhetoric or accusatory in a McCarthy style. Full article Jay Ambrose July 13, 2009Washington Times Excerpts: The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney said Monday that running for political office is on her horizon. "It's something I very well may do," said Elizabeth "Liz" Cheney, a lawyer and State Department appointee who has worked on two Republican presidential campaigns. Ms. Cheney told The Washington Times America's Morning News that recent new reports that her father ordered the CIA to hide information from Congress and that a government probe could follow appears like political cover for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democrats who have accused agency Director Leon Panetta of lying. "It gets more and more appalling everyday," she said. "I think they're very worried about Speaker Pelosi." Thursday, April 12, 2007; Page A27 Excerpts: Anyone familiar with the past two years of Lebanese politics would never claim, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi did in Damascus last week, that "the road to Damascus is a road to peace." Her assertion must have seemed especially naive to the people of Lebanon, where the list of the slain reads like a "Who's Who" of Syria's most vocal and effective opponents. This round of murders began at 12:56 p.m. on Feb. 14, 2005, when 2,000 pounds of TNT exploded outside the St. George Hotel in Beirut, killing former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri and 22 others. Hariri's crime? He was increasingly outspoken in opposition to Syria's involvement in Lebanon. Basil Fleihan, a member of the Lebanese parliament, was riding with Hariri that day. Burned over 95 percent of his body, he was recognized only when someone heard him whisper "Yasma," his wife's name. Fleihan died two weeks later. Following Hariri's assassination, Lebanon's freedom forces, known as the "March 14 movement," demanded an end to Syria's military occupation. They won a majority in the country's parliamentary elections. Ryan Powers June 4, 2009 Excerpts: During his speech today, President Obama reiterated standing U.S. policy that the expansion of Israeli settlements in Palestine must be ended. “The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements. This construction violates previous agreements and undermines efforts to achieve peace. It is time for these settlements to stop,” he said. On MSNBC this afternoon, former Vice President Cheney’s daughter, Liz Cheney, argued that Obama’s insistence that Israel freeze settlement expansion goes “much further” than the Roadmap to Peace negotiated by the Bush administration in 2002: MITCHELL: Can you clarify at all a dispute some or among former Bush administration middle east experts and officials as to whether there was a secret promise or an agreement with Israel that Israel could proceed with settlement expansion to accommodate population growth? May 22, 2009 11:25 AM ET By Paul Bedard, Washington Whispers Excerpts: The hottest Republican property out there isn't former Vice President Dick Cheney but his daughter Liz, who has taken to the airwaves to defend her dad and the whole Bush administration on national security and Guantánamo Bay issues. Liz Cheney, who followed the former veep's hard-hitting speech criticizing President Obama's policies with a CNN appearance, is becoming so popular in conservative circles that some want her to run for office. "She's awesome. Everyone wants her to run," said a close friend. But others say that she is unlikely to run for office now because she is raising five young children, helping to write her father's book, and working on other major conservative projects. "She's a chip off the block!" said a longtime friend. A forceful defender of the administration and her dad, Liz Cheney has been appearing on TV with greater regularity. She brings to the screen a combination of her dad's steely focus and her mom's softer touch. "It's a two-fer. She comes off a bit better than he does sometimes," a conservative consultant said. Paul Bedard Washington Whispers June 3, 2009REAL CLEAR POLITICS Public Against Closing Gitmo, Sides With Cheney Posted by Tom Bevan June 2, 2009 Excerpts: A majority of Americans (54%) do not want to see the detainee prison facility at Guantanamo Bay closed and will be "upset" with the Obama administration if it continues to move forward with plans to shutdown the facility, according to a poll released this morning by Gallup. (UPDATE: Having just looked at the internals of the poll, it appears the write up in USA Today didn't give the entire picture. A large majority, 65%, say the US should not close down Guantanamo Bay. Of those, 54% - the number given in the USA Today article - say they will be "upset" if the administration continues its plans to close down the facility, while the additional 11% who also believe the Gitmo should not be closed down showed more indifference toward the administration pursuing its stated goal (ie. they would "not be upset) of shuttering Gitmo by next January.) By an even greater margin of three-to-one, respondents said they oppose the administration's plans to move some of the detainees to prison facilities within the United States. Lastly, the poll shows that Vice President Cheney clearly won the national security "showdown" on Guantanamo Bay with President Obama last month. Forty percent (40%) of those surveyed agreed with Cheney's belief that the prison at Guantanamo Bay had helped make America safer. Only 18% agreed with President Obama's assertion that the housing of detainees at Gitmo had made America less safe.
