Public Sees Beyond Hysterics on Immigration
Meanwhile, hysteria about domestic fascism is unhelpful, even though it is a liberal tradition.
In his 1944 State of the Union address, FDR identified opponents of his domestic agenda as fascists.
Declaring that his "one supreme objective" was "security," including "economic security, social security, moral security," he issued a dire warning: Woodrow Wilson's progressive policies had been frustrated by "rightist reaction" and "if history were to repeat itself and we were to return to the so-called 'normalcy' of the 1920s -- then it is certain that even though we shall have conquered our enemies on the battlefields abroad, we shall have yielded to the spirit of Fascism here at home."
Today's hysterics are unoriginal. But they learned their bad manners from a master.
WASHINGTON -- "Physician, heal yourself," said the founder of the church in which Roger Mahony is a cardinal. He is the Catholic archbishop of Los Angeles and he should heed the founder's admonition before accusing Arizonans of intemperateness. He says Arizona's new law pertaining to illegal immigration involves "reverting to German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques whereby people are required to turn one another in to the authorities on any suspicion of documentation."
"Our highest priority today," he says, "is to bring calm and reasoning to discussions about our immigrant brothers and sisters." His idea of calm reasoning is to call Arizona's new law for coping with illegal immigration "the country's most retrogressive, mean-spirited, and useless anti-immigrant law." He also says it is "dreadful," "abhorrent" and a "tragedy," and its assumption is that "immigrants come to our country to rob, plunder and consume public resources."
My Comment on Yahoo Regarding The Exaggerated Use of the Term Racial Profiling Over The Enactment of A Common Sense Law To Avoid Murder, Kidnapping, Drug Smuggling and a Crime Spree
This term "racial profiling" has become a serious weapon against all law abiding citizens who also pay practically all of the taxes to run this country. The federal government is now headed by the leaders and early devotees of the 1960's--the Blame America/Hate America Radicals. For decades, this bunch has dictated to and forced their upside down thinking of victim hood (like painting these illegal immigrants as victims) on states and individuals, so that even carefully constructed common-sense laws, to avoid being murdered can be depicted as something evil. Luckily the Tea Party and much of America has had enough and we are striking back. The next move should be to start telling those running for office that we want the sacred status of this phony term "racial profiling" to be dealt with. We law abiding citizens also reject ABUSE FROM PROFILING, but we definitely do--WANT PROFILING USED ON OURSELVES AND ALL OTHERS--where it's appropriate.

Arizona Law Promises to Be 'Toughest' on Illegal Immigration
Republicans Float Bill to Charge Illegal Immigrants with Trespassing -- in the State
By RUSSELL GOLDMAN
March 26, 2010
Excerpts:
A bill empowering police to arrest illegal immigrants and charge them with trespassing for simply being in the state of Arizona, is likely just weeks away from becoming the toughest law of its kind anywhere in the country. The country's toughest sheriff takes rehabilitation to new levels.
Already passed by the state's Senate and currently being reconciled with a similar version in the House, the bill would essentially criminalize the presence of the 460,000 illegal immigrants living in the state.
The measure allows police to detain people on the suspicion that they are illegal immigrants, outlaws citizens from employing day laborers, and makes it illegal for anyone to transport an illegal immigrant, even a family member, anywhere in the state.
County Spends $600 Mil On Welfare For Illegal Immigrants
Last Updated: Thu, 03/11/2010 - 3:14pm
Excerpts:
For the second consecutive year taxpayers in a single U.S. county will dish out more than half a billion dollars just to cover the welfare and food-stamp costs of illegal immigrants.
Los Angeles County, the nation’s most populous, may be in the midst of a dire financial crisis but somehow there are plenty of funds for illegal aliens. In January alone, anchor babies born to the county’s illegal immigrants collected more than $50 million in welfare benefits. At that rate the cash-strapped county will pay around $600 million this year to provide illegal aliens’ offspring with food stamps and other welfare perks.
The exorbitant figure, revealed this week by a county supervisor, doesn’t even include the enormous cost of educating, medically treating or incarcerating illegal aliens in the sprawling county of about 10 million residents. Los Angeles County annually spends more than $1 billion for those combined services, including $500 million for healthcare and $350 million for public safety.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says he feels the pain of employers pinched by intensified efforts to control illegal immigration, but adds that until Congress enacts broad immigration reforms they shouldn't expect any changes in enforcement.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Chertoff said this week that the rising complaints from businesses offer some evidence the Bush administration's approach is working.
"This is harsh but accurate proof positive that, for the first time in decades, we've succeeded in changing the dynamic and (are) actually beginning to reduce illegal immigration," Chertoff said. "Unfortunately, unless you counterbalance that with a robust system to allow people to come in temporarily and legally, you're going to wind up with an economic problem."

‘Comprehensive Immigration Reform’ Back from the Dead?
According to Rep. Dan Boren (D-OK), an immigration bill will likely be passed that is very similar to the one that was defeated by the American public last summer.
If our federal government passes an immigration reform package that includes a path to legal status for the 20 million or more illegal aliens, the hard work done by legislators throughout the United States on all levels to address the illegal immigration crisis would become irrelevant. Why? Virtually every illegal alien would be eligible to remain in the United States irrespective of how they entered our country (and possibly even if they violated other laws along the way).
Please consider a few reasons why I have been adamantly opposed to a guest worker program for illegal aliens.

Surveys show that most feel the country needs to do more to secure its borders and oppose awarding driver’s licenses.
An ABC News poll conducted in September found that:
54 percent of Americans believed that illegal immigrants do more to hurt the country than help
34 percent said they do more to help
6 percent said they neither help nor hurt
7 percent were unsure.
Although Americans are often accused of prejudice because of their strong feelings about illegal workers, most fair minded people simply want to see the nation's politicians make a committment to doing the right thing.
All American citizens should be here legally and contributing their fair share to the nation's obligations.
Because politicians have acted irresponsibly for many years does not mean the blame should be put on the country as a whole.
Employers should be put in a position whereby they are given so many days to have only legal workers on their payroll. If they do not they should face reasonably serious penalties.

MEXICAN BORDER-270 MILES OF FENCE HAVE BEEN BUILT
In an article in Townhall.com, Amanda Carpenter reports:
To date, there have been 270 miles of pedestrian and vehicle fencing constructed along the Southwest border, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in a Tuesday briefing to reporters about progress being made to secure the border.
By the end of 2008 Chertoff said he expects to have 670 miles of border barriers erected, as long as Congress continues to appropriate money for construction...

Let the deportations begin!
Dinesh D'Souza
Let the deportations begin! I've never understood all the nonsense about how we should be sympathetic toward illegals who came here to work and find a better life. We don't extend such sympathy to other people who routinely break the law. We aren't sympathetic, for instance, toward people who break into banks or hold up grocery stores in order to support their families and get a fresh start in life. We don't get teary-eyed about folks who engage in insider trading or bribery in order to send their kids to college and enjoy the American dream. We feel sorry for these lawbreakers, and than clap them into prison.
I'm an immigrant myself, and I'm pro-immigration, but that means legal immigration. America can afford to take in a decent number of immigrants every year. We need workers in certain fields, and should admit those kinds of workers. Pat Buchanan and others say the immigrants are ruining American culture, but that blame, I fear, falls squarely on the natives. It is the indigenous leftists, not the immigrants, who are responsible for the cultural decay that we see around us. I don’t see immigrants pushing for partial birth abortion or Hollywood permissiveness or gay marriage. Even the failure of immigrants to assimilate is partly the fault of the political left. What happened to all the programs that once helped immigrants learn about America and embrace the American way of life? The left got rid of them. Now the left is pushing multiculturalism in the schools. These programs are aimed at preventing assimilation and promoting an ethnic separatism that is packaged in the bright colors of “diversity.”
Republican presidential hopeful U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., speaks to the media after meeting with members of the Alabama Veterans of Foreign Wars, Friday June 15, 2007, in Birmingham, Ala. McCain said Friday there is reason to hope that an immigration reform bill will pass, now that it has been revived from what looked like certain death."Most Americans agree the status quo is unsatisfactory and is de-facto amnesty." (AP Photo/Rob Carr)Related Media:VIDEO: Bush Makes Immigration Case On HillVIDEO: McCain: Address on ImmigrationVIDEO: Hunter: Immigration
While I support immigrants who assimilate, I think illegal immigration is an entirely different matter. Here I think it’s important for a great country to seize control of its borders. It’s absurd that in an age of terror we cannot figure out who is getting in and who is going out. Our longstanding policy of delicately depositing illegals back on the other side of the Rio Grande, so they can try again the next day, is nothing short of embarassing. It’s time to crack down here, not to go soft. For these reasons I have serious reservations about the current immigration plan being pushed by President Bush and Senator Kennedy. This is basically an amnesty program, even if it makes the illegals jump through a few hoops before they get their citizenship papers. Why Bush and Kennedy favor amnesty for illegal immigrants but not for other kinds of lawbreakers is not explained, because there is no explanation.
The case of Yaderlin Jimenez, however, is a special case. Her husband Alex Jimenez is one of the American soldiers missing in Iraq. Recently the dead body of one of Jjimenez’s fellow captives was found. Jimenez’s own military tags were located in an Al Qaeda hideout near Baghdad. HIs fate is unknown but not looking good.
Several months ago, Jimenez applied for a green card for his wife Yaderlin, whom he married in 2004. The authorities discovered that in 2001 she came illegally to America from the Dominican Republic. This does not seem to be a case of a woman who got married solely for the purpose of staying on in America. Ordinarily Yaderlin would have a right to get a green card by virtue of marrying an American citizen. Her problem, however, is that she came into the country illegally. So the immigration service has begun deportation proceedings. And ordinarily I'd say we should start planning Yaderlin's farewell party.
But the specific circumstances of this case give me pause. Here is a situation where her husband is, in a very literal way, putting his life on the line for his country. He may already have paid the ultimate price. Now you might say that if we make an exception for Yaderlin Jimenez, where will it end? The simple answer is that it should end with her.
Let’s remember that laws are general rules. The law is an instrument that is aimed at securing justice. Every now and then, however, we realize that the application of a rule in a given situation will promote not justice but injustice. This is when we make an exception. We could of course change the law so that military families are excempt from immigration rules. I was on a New York radio show discussing this case, and that is what the radio host proposed. But I think his solution is unwise. Hard cases make bad law, and it’s not generally a good idea to have laws that apply to some groups but not to others.
Therefore I think the immigration people should make an exception and let Mrs. Jimenez stay. No general amnesty for illegals, but amnesty for her.

Former Attorney General Ed Meese Reveals Major Problems in Immigration Bill
On May 16th the U.S. proposed a bill with the hope of solving the problem of illegal immigrants.
The bill is already surrounded by controversy. It seems that most Americans support some kind of fair measure, but there is a wide diversity of opinion over what constitutes fairness.
What a majority of Americans have made clear as their first priority, is border security. If, as many senators say, this bill addresses border security, the question quite logically arises as to why an agreement last year to build an 800 mile fence has now instead, become a 350 mile fence.
This point becomes all the more suspicious upon learning that so far a mere 2.2 miles of that fence has been constructed .
There is also the question of amnesty. Technically amnesty is defined by the Merriam-Webster online dictionary as : the act of an authority (as a government) by which pardon is granted to a large group of individuals.
Because there are fines and other measures involved for those now working illegally proponents of the bill deny that the bill provides amnesty.
Maybe that’s true technically but it doesn’t seem to pass the smell test when thinking about the spirit of the law, to say nothing of those who have been patiently waiting their turn.
Likely millions who have waited for years, will still have substantial waits behind many who came illegally in the last several years and will be allowed to stay and work.
The bill will allow an estimated 66 million new immigrants over the next 20 years, according to the Heritage Foundation.
This has huge implications for the future of America. Those implications could possibly be negative.
Suspicions are also raised over the fact that recently the American public heard little public discussion about immigration legislation and suddenly this huge bill comes to us with Senator John McCain suggesting it must be passed in a hurry.
There are so many qualifying provisions in this immigration bill relating to border security and citizenship requirements that the necessary time for a healthy debate should not be treated with impunity.
All factions seem dissatisfied at the moment.
Hopefully enough time will be given to make this legislation beneficial to America’s future. Presently, congress seems to be guaging political advantage rather than the long term good of the nation.
