Thoughts on The Federal Debt
It is a good idea to examine the debt burden as a ratio.The ratio is debt compared to the size of the economy and the direction it is going.
This direction, up or down takes place by how much the economy grows to how much we let government spend.
The Tax Cuts of President Bush (2001-2003) certainly did an amazing job of spurring the economy.
Growth in the economy has been quite satisfactory. Job growth, once it got started has been spectacular.
There is often over emphasis on deficits. A reasonable amount of borrowing by individuals, families and government if done responsibly and for a good investment can yield positive results.
Unfortunately too much of the borrowing we're talking about here has to do with entitlements and wasteful government programs.
The debt ratio is of great importance when examining the debt burden. What Americans should give a priority to is how much government (federal in this case) is spending as a percent of GDP.
That figure is over 20%. We should target a number such as 17% over several years and let congress know that we do no want its spending to exceed that amount.
The danger of debt is that it represents a claim on future taxes.
Congress loves to send money back to constituents in order to get reelected. This can lead to recklessness as far as future taxes go.
Getting rid ofasteful spending yields economic growth and reduces debt in the absence of new wasteful spending.
Conversely, raising taxes to reduce debt, stifles economic growth, defeating the purpose of improving the debt ratio.
