Collapsing Ceiling

DEBT AND DEFICITS

Posted 02/04/2010 07:00 PM ET

Leadership: Congress stands ready to lift the debt ceiling an additional $1.9 trillion and is eager to waste hundreds of billions more. Do our representatives realize the long-term damage they're doing to the economy?

A topic that would have seemed absurd just a few years ago is now raised openly by investment advisers and some economists: What if the U.S. defaults on its debt? It's not out of the question, given the extraordinary surge of debt-related spending by this Congress and president.

As we've noted, the debt that will be added over the next decade or so will break all records. Indeed, by some recent estimates our debt will surge $13 trillion by 2020, more than twice the total debt accumulated in our nation's first 220 years of existence.

Rollback Time

Recall the stimulus, let the de-TARPing begin, and set the Fed free.

Excerpts:

Testifying before the House Budget Committee this week, Ben Bernanke said that when the time comes, the Fed will raise interest rates in order to stop inflation from building in the next recovery. He also asked for “fiscal balance” to sustain financial stability. On the surface -- in terms of keeping prices stable and restoring value to the softening U.S. dollar -- this is positive. Surely Mr. Bernanke wants to do right for America, and he’s giving it his best shot.

But when you talk to traders and economists, the whisper story is that Bernanke and the Fed are no longer truly independent of the Obama White House and Treasury. As a result, Bernanke will not be able to slow down the printing presses and gradually lift the near-zero target rate in a timely and effective manner. Already the Fed has created more than $1 trillion in new cash, and the M2 money supply is growing at its fastest pace in 25 years.

This monetary explosion explains what’s really driving the dollar down and Treasury rates up (alongside rising gold and oil prices). It’s not huge budget deficits, but the growing fear that a less-than-independent Fed will keep pushing new money into the financial system in order to fund Obama’s liberal spending policies.

GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT: FIRST QUARTER 2009 (ADVANCE)

Real gross domestic product -- the output of goods and services produced by labor and propertylocated in the United States -- decreased at an annual rate of 6.1 percent in the first quarter of 2009, (thatis, from the fourth quarter to the first quarter), according to advance estimates released by the Bureau ofEconomic Analysis. In the fourth quarter, real GDP decreased 6.3 percent.

The Bureau emphasized that the first-quarter “advance” estimates are based on source data thatare incomplete or subject to further revision by the source agency (see the box on page 4). The first-quarter “preliminary” estimates, based on more comprehensive data, will be released on May 29, 2009.

The decrease in real GDP in the first quarter primarily reflected negative contributions fromexports, private inventory investment, equipment and software, nonresidential structures, and residentialfixed investment that were partly offset by a positive contribution from personal consumptionexpenditures (PCE). Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, decreased.

The slightly smaller decrease in real GDP in the first quarter than in the fourth reflected an upturnin PCE for durable and nondurable goods and a larger decrease in imports that were mostly offset bylarger decreases in private inventory investment and in nonresidential structures and a downturn infederal government spending.

Motor vehicle output subtracted 1.36 percentage points from the first-quarter change in real GDPafter subtracting 2.01 percentage points from the fourth-quarter change. Final sales of computers added0.05 percentage point to the first-quarter change in real GDP after subtracting 0.02 percentage pointfrom the fourth-quarter change.

And Now a Moment of Realism

Full article Wall Street Journal

Barack Obama during his acceptance speech played a riff on Phil Gramm's impolitic remarks about a "mental recession" and a "nation of whiners." Like a succession of Democrats at the podium, he painted the economy in the darkest, most hopeless of colors -- never mind that the economy is actually growing and unemployment is still lower than it was during much of the Clinton presidency.[Barack Obama]

But here's the bad news for the dour Democrats in Denver -- most Americans don't share their economic pessimism. That's the finding of public opinion expert Karlyn Bowman of the American Enterprise Institute. "Most Americans are feeling pretty good about their jobs and their personal lives," she says after investigating the fine details of recent polls. Her report goes right to Mr. Gramm's concern about the gap between actual economic performance and the dreary negativity of politicians and the media.

She finds that 76% of Americans say they are actually optimistic about the direction of their own lives and their personal economic situations -- even though only 18% are optimistic about the country. That's the big disconnect. "These numbers haven't changed much over time," Ms. Bowman tells me.

Compassion Versus Reality

By Walter E. Williams

Wednesday, June 6, 2007

Dr. Thomas Sowell, a distinguished economist and longtime friend and colleague, recently wrote a series of columns under the title "A War of Words." He pointed out that liberals succeed in duping the public because they are so clever with words that they give the appearance of compassion. Liberals talk about the need for "affordable" housing and health care. They tarnish their enemies with terms such as "price-gouging" and "corporate greed." Uninformed and unthinking Americans fall easy prey to this demagoguery.

Politicians exploit public demands that government ought to do something about this or that problem by taking measures giving them greater control over our lives. For the most part, whatever politicians do, whether it's rent controls to produce "affordable" housing, or price controls to eliminate "price-gouging," the result is a calamity worse than the original problem. For example, two of the most costly housing markets are the rent-controlled cities of San Francisco and New York. If you're over 40, you'll remember the chaos produced by the gasoline price controls of the 1970s. Socialist agendas have considerable appeal, but they produce disaster, and the more socialist they are, the greater the disaster.

Liberals often denounce free markets as immoral. The reality is exactly the opposite. Free markets, characterized by peaceable, voluntary exchange, with respect for property rights and the rule of law, are more moral than any other system of resource allocation. Let's examine just one reason for the superior morality of free markets.

Say that I mow your lawn and you pay me $30, which we might think of as certificates of performance. Having mowed your lawn, I visit my grocer and demand that my fellow men serve me by giving me 3 pounds of steak and a six-pack of beer. In effect, the grocer asks, "Williams, you're demanding that your fellow man, as ranchers and brewers, serve you; what did you do to serve your fellow man?" I say, "I mowed his lawn." The grocer says, "Prove it!" That's when I hand over my certificates of performance -- the $30.

Look at the morality of a resource allocation method that requires that I serve my fellow man in order to have a claim on what he produces and contrast it with government resource allocation. The government can say, "Williams, you don't have to serve your fellow man; through our tax code, we'll take what he produces and give it to you." Of course, if I were to privately take what my fellow man produced, we'd call it theft. The only difference is when the government does it, that theft is legal but nonetheless theft -- the taking of one person's rightful property to give to another.

Liberals love to talk about this or that human right, such as a right to health care, food or housing. That's a perverse usage of the term "right." A right, such as a right to free speech, imposes no obligation on another, except that of non-interference. The so-called right to health care, food or housing, whether a person can afford it or not, is something entirely different; it does impose an obligation on another. If one person has a right to something he didn't produce, simultaneously and of necessity it means that some other person does not have right to something he did produce. That's because, since there's no Santa Claus or Tooth Fairy, in order for government to give one American a dollar, it must, through intimidation, threats and coercion, confiscate that dollar from some other American. I'd like to hear the moral argument for taking what belongs to one person to give to another person.

There are people in need of help. Charity is one of the nobler human motivations. The act of reaching into one's own pockets to help a fellow man in need is praiseworthy and laudable. Reaching into someone else's pocket is despicable and worthy of condemnation.

Dr. Williams serves on the faculty of George Mason University as John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics and is the author of More Liberty Means Less Government: Our Founders Knew This Well.

Jobless Claims Fall Again

Wall Street Journal Report

By BRIAN BLACKSTONE

WASHINGTON -- The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits fell for a fifth-straight time last week, confounding expectations for a sharp rise and suggesting that labor markets are recovering rapidly from last month's tepid rise in payrolls.

Jobless claims fell 5,000 to 293,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis in the week ended May 12, the Labor Department said Thursday, the lowest level since Jan. 13. Claims for the May 5 week were revised to 298,000 from 297,000.

Claims levels below 300,000, if sustained, are usually consistent with very strong monthly job growth.NEWSHOUND QUIZ

The four-week average -- which economists use to gauge underlying labor market trends -- slid by 12,000 to 305,500.

The new claims levels were well below Wall Street expectations. The median estimate of 15 economists polled by Dow Jones Newswires was for an 18,000 increase to 315,000 in the latest week. There were no special factors affecting the data, a Labor Department analyst said.

The latest week's claims data include the survey period for the May employment report, and suggest a rebound in payrolls this month after April's surprisingly weak gain of just 88,000, which pushed the jobless rate up from 4.4% to 4.5%. Indeed, jobless claims in the latest week were 48,000 below the comparable week in April.

The claims data should also ease worries about the state of the U.S. consumer. Though retail sales were sluggish in April, weekly retailer reports suggest a robust start to May, and solid job and income fundamentals would support spending going forward.

According to the Labor Department report Thursday, continuing claims for workers drawing unemployment benefits for more than a week tumbled by 78,000 to 2,473,000 in the week ended May 5, the latest week for which such data are available. That's the lowest level since Jan. 27.

The insured unemployment rate was unchanged at 1.9% in the May 5 week.

There were 27 states and territories reporting an increase in initial jobless claims for the May 5 week, while 26 reported a decrease. Kentucky had the biggest increase, 4,053, due to layoffs and automobile and manufacturing industries. New Jersey reported the biggest decrease, 1,601, due to fewer layoffs in construction and services.

Plenty of job creation is taking place and inflation is low. These seem to be very prosperous times yet the Mainstream Media constantly dwells on any negatives that exist.

"New Hiring Slows." "Wages Raise Inflation Fears." "Companies Aren't Hiring." "Slowdown Ahead."

No matter how good the economic news, the Mainstream Media, or as Rush Limbaugh calls it, the Drive By Media, seems to always "Accentuate The Negative. Here is the real news.
